Work to Learn Program

Making a Sword

The Falling Hammer Productions work to learn program is an inexpensive way for aspiring metalsmiths to gain knowledge, skill, and experience in a professional environment. In essence, the "apprentice" will help us take care of the multitude of jobs that need doing around the shop. In exchange, they will receive both direct forge work experience and one-on-one training through our tutorials program.

The apprentice can expect to do a variety of different jobs around the shop based on their current skill level and the amount of time they have to devote to the program. Jobs will range from cleaning and organizing of the shop to drawing tapers, texturing materials and hand sanding. What jobs need doing will depend on the skill level of the apprentice and on the current needs of the shop.

In exchange for this work the apprentice will receive credit towards one-on-one tutorials with one of the three owners of the shop. The starting exchange rate is 18 hours of shop work for one, three-hour tutorial. As the apprentice’s skill level improves and a wider range of jobs can be accomplished, so too will the exchange rate improve. The tutorials themselves can be on any aspect of metalsmithing that is within the skill level of the apprentice and that the smiths of Falling Hammer feel qualified to teach. Past tutorials have included bladesmithing, swordsmithing, basic and intermediate blacksmithing, and a wide variety of project-oriented tutorials.

If you are interested in applying for this program, please fill out the liability form below. Applicants should be at least 15 years old and be prepared to learn a lot and get dirty in the process. There is no upper age limit on our program; all applicants with the capacity to learn and do the necessary work will be considered. If you are under 18 years of age we will also need the signature of your parent or guardian.

This program is not meant to be a traditional "apprenticeship". Applicants will not work in the shop with the understanding that once they have a good knowledge of smithing they will be given a job. This program is strictly for the purpose of people who have extra time and want to get experience in a forge working in return for learning basic blacksmith skills.
